How Can Social Networking Help Your Job Search?

This past Friday I attended ConvergeSouth, an unconference about social networking and blogging. It was a great event and definitely hope to attend next year and stay for the full 2 days! There was one breakout session that I attended that was pretty interesting in regards to job seekers. It was called Social Networking as a Social Force, hosted by Jason Calacanis and Anton Zuiker. It was really interesting to hear about different social networks that were helping people communicate about charity events, networking events and tons of other examples. Sites like Facebook, Twitter and countless others are helping people get word out so much faster and easier. Anyways, during the session to prove a point, Jason uses Twitter to send out a message to call his phone to make sure it was working properly.

Within minutes his phone is ringing off the hook of people responding to his request. Some of them knew Calacanis personally but some didn't. One gentleman in particular happened to not know him but responded the same. He was a web programmer and was invited to contact Jason about a job. It was one of those times where I was really amazed at the fact that this guy could potentially have a new job if he wanted.

It just goes to show that you can't leave any stone unturned. This guy just answered to a request for help, and he might get a job out of it! It's pretty amazing what social networking can do to help your job search. The great thing too is that we have our own Twitter account. See, when I post jobs it takes anywhere from 1-24 hours for a job to show up in search results depending on server usage and what-not. So what I do, after I post most jobs, I'll go ahead and tweet about it. That way you the job seeker have instantaneous access to those jobs. The great thing about Twitter is you can set up an account to follow someone and receive notification of updates just by the web OR via your mobile phone or instant messenger. It's just another way to get jobs delivered to you. Go to twitter.com/carolinajobs to sign up!
