Making Your New Year's Resolutions? 5 Tips for Achieving Your Goals

The last day of the Year! Does it seem like 2007 went by super fast? Are you ready for 2008? Do you have a list of resolutions that you want to accomplish in the new year? Really a resolution is similar to a goal. The difference lies in the planning. When you just resolve to do something without defining how you're going to get there, it's easy to let those resolutions go to the wayside.

How about instead, making a goal. Here are some tips for setting goals:

1. You want to make sure your goal is specific. Know who, what, where, when, which, and why. This will help you find concrete ways to attain this goal and be successful in reaching it.

2. Then, make sure you can measure your success. You don't want to generalize, this way you'll be able to measure your progress and know if you're still on track towards reaching your goal. Ask how much? How many? How will I know when it is accomplished?

3. Make sure that you are able to figure out ways to make it happen and achieve your goal. At the same time make realistic goals. You want to make something that is still a challenge but still within your abilities. Make sure you are not only able to work toward this goal but you want to attain this goal. Your goal is realistic if you actually believe that it can be accomplished. Again, make sure it's something that you want to accomplish not just something that sounds good.

4. Set a time frame of when this is going to happen. With no time frame, there is no sense of urgency… "someday" won't get you moving in the direction of attaining your goal.

5. Don't just write down your goal, but write down concrete things you're going to do. Maybe even make a calendar. "Monday, I will search and apply for 5 jobs I am qualified for", etc. Find one or two people you trust who will believe in you and can help keep you accountable. I know for me, it helps to have someone to help motivate me.

Whatever your goals, whether it's to get a new job, advancing in your own career, going back to school, buying a new house or car or whatever it is that you'd like to do, you can achieve them with some discipline and effort. Need some more motivation? Chris Brogan has suggested some great reading materials on setting goals.

See you next year, Charleston!
Happy New Year!
